Abstract

"This insightful collection of essays explores the ways in which open education can democratise access to education for all. It is a rich resource that offers both research and case studies to relate the application of open technologies and approaches in education settings around the world. Global in perspective, this book argues strongly for the value of open education in both the developed and developing worlds. Through a mixture of theoretical and practical approaches, it demonstrates that open education promotes ideals of inclusion, diversity, and social justice to achieve the vision of education as a fundamental human right.
A must-read for practitioners, policy-makers, scholars and students in the field of education."

Abstract

In this paper we explore the impact of an inter-classrooms math tournament implemented through internet. The strategy is to increase learning through intra-classroom collaboration generated by inter-classroom competition. Ten fourth grade classes with all their students from eight schools participated. During previous weeks students practiced on-line and played a cloud based board game designed to learn word problems. Afterwards, all students participated on an inter-classroom tournament. They played on-line synchronously during 60 min. The game was played in dyads formed from different schools. The list of each classroom average score was published every 5 min on each student computer. We found an important social facilitation effect: a significant improvement on the performance of male students weak on math, and therefore a reduction on the performance gap between mathematically weak and strong male students. The improvement of female students weak on math was also significant but lower.

Abstract

The volume shows how the expertise of women's and gender studies can enrich the debate on inclusion, and analyses how debates on inclusion and gender are interwoven. How can a claim to participation based on a broad understanding of inclusion be spelled out in terms of gender theory? What perspectives do women's and gender studies offer on the problems of exclusion processes in the medium of democratic promises of inclusion? How are the categories of gender and disability intertwined? How can a critical position on the programmatic debate on inclusion be formulated? The 12th Yearbook presents empirical and theoretical contributions to the relationship between approaches to inclusion and gender theory.

Abstract

Until now, the category of `culture' functioned as a central category of difference and explanation for reduced ability of the support system to reach families at the intersections of migration and disability. The barriers are alleged to be located above all within the family. Their culturally specific interpretation of disability, according to this assumption, does not correspond to the expectations of empowerment in disability services. To confront this one-dimensional perspective, Donja Amirpur illustrates the complex life situations of these families. Through interviews and with the help of an intersectional, multi-faceted analysis, she depicts the barriers in the support system, and promotes a critical confrontation with hegemonic practices on a structural level.
