Abstract

This book retraces the multidisciplinary research project EMSURE - Energy and Mobility for Sustainable Regions. Communicational articles – developed from a set of interviews with the researchers – aim to depict the wide range of disciplines that constitute the EMSURE. An encompassing framework that comprises such diverse areas as intelligent use of energy, sustainable mobility, buildings and energy efficiency, clean energy supply and assessment, and sustainable energy assessment, or planning for sustainability. Integrated in the Energy for Sustainability (EFS) initiative, of the University of Coimbra, EMSURE is established as a research project focused on multidisciplinary issues. Its main objectives include developing models, methodologies and technologies that enable the decision-makers and companies to promote a sustainable path within the Portugal Centre Region

Abstract

Certification emerged from the 1992 Rio Earth Summit amidstgreat hope that we would finally begin to address the wicked environmentaland social problems facing our globe. Despite a proliferationof certification schemes in twenty-five industry sectors over more thantwenty years, the environmental and social ills resulting from destructiveand irresponsible exploitation of natural and human resources havegrown still worse.Beyond Certification reviews the positive aspects of certification, of whichthere are many. But more important, it argues that we can no longer affordto gloss over its failures. It is powerfully clear we need a very differentapproach and set of actions to managing wicked problems like deforestationand exploitation. The book offers one alternative model, based on Values,Transparency, Transformation and Verification, and shares stories of howfarsighted people in very large corporations in a number of industries haveadopted this model to manage natural resources far more responsiblywhile also benefitting local communities. Part of the power of this modelis that the companies work in partnership with an extensive network ofNGOs, local communities, suppliers, and other stakeholders to effectneeded change.Beyond Certification does not claim that this VT-TV model is the onlysolution. Rather, it serves to show how new and seemingly radicalthinking can resonate so strongly with many people and companiesthat it catalyzes positive change. It makes the case for our continuing to invest more thought and proactive energy to develop still otherapproaches to grappling with the serious issues confronting us all, before it is too late.

Abstract

Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance have most commonly been viewed in the context of human use and effects. However, both have co-existed in nature for millennia. Recently the roles of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes have started to be discussed in terms of functions other than bacterial inhibition and protection. This special topic will focus on both the traditional role of antibiotics as warfare mechanisms and their alternative roles and uses within nature such as antibiotics as signals or communication mechanisms, antibiotic selection at low concentrations, the non-specific role of resistance mechanisms in nature: e.g. efflux pumps, evolution of antibiotic resistance and the role of persisters in natural antibiotic resistance.

Abstract

Schizophrenia is a multi-factorial disease characterized by a high heritability and environmental risk factors (e.g. stress and cannabis use). In recent years, an increasing number of researchers worldwide have started investigating the ‘two-hit hypothesis’ of schizophrenia predicting that genetic and environmental risk factors interactively cause the development of the disorder. This work is starting to produce valuable new animal models and reveal novel insights into the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Eventually, it might help advance studies of the molecular pathways involved in this mental disorder and propose more specific molecular medicine. However, the complexity of this multi-factorial line of research has also caused difficulties in data interpretation and comparison. Our research topic is intended to cover past and current directions in research dedicated to the understanding and measurement of gene-environment interactions (GxE) in schizophrenia, the neurobiological and behavioural consequences of such interactions as well as the challenges and limitations one encounters when working on complex aetiological systems.

Abstract

"As population estimates for 2050 reach over 9 billion, issues of food security and nutrition have been dominating academic and policy debates. A total of 805 million people are undernourished worldwide and malnutrition affects nearly every country on the planet. Despite impressive productivity increases, there is growing evidence that conventional agricultural strategies fall short of eliminating global hunger, as well as having long-term ecological consequences. Forests can play an important role in complementing agricultural production to address the Sustainable Development Goals on zero hunger. Forests and trees can be managed to provide better and more nutritionally-balanced diets, greater control over food inputs – particularly during lean seasons and periods of vulnerability (especially for marginalised groups) – and deliver ecosystem services for crop production. However forests are undergoing a rapid process of degradation, a complex process that governments are struggling to reverse. This volume provides important evidence and insights about the potential of forests to reducing global hunger and malnutrition, exploring the different roles of landscapes, and the governance approaches that are required for the equitable delivery of these benefits. Forests and Food is essential reading for researchers, students, NGOs and government departments responsible for agriculture, forestry, food security and poverty alleviation around the globe."

Abstract

It becomes increasingly clear that the basis of antibiotic resistance problem among bacterial pathogens is not confined to the borders of clinical microbiology but has broader ecological and evolutionary associations. This Research Topic “Role and prevalence of antibiosis and the related resistance genes in the environment” in Frontiers in Microbiology, section Antimicrobials, Resistance and Chemotherapy, presents the examples of occurrence and diversity of antibiotic resistance genes in the wide range of environments, from the grasslands of the Colombian Andes, to the dairy farms and small animal veterinary hospitals in the United Stated, and to the various environments of Continental Europe and Indochina. Besides, various genetic mechanisms and selection/co-selection factors contributing to the dissemination and maintenance of antibiotic resistance genes are presented. The topic is finalized by the mathematical modeling approach to access the probability of rare horizontal gene transfer events in bacterial populations.

Abstract

This collection of essays looks at the issue of human well-being from the point of view of environmental aesthetics. Questions addressed include: What role do aesthetic values have in advancing well-being? Are there environments that are particularly supportive of well-being? What is the place of aesthetic factors in environmental and city planning? The authors of the first part of the book illuminate the relationship between aesthetics and well-being by discussing such notions and ideas as aesthetic well-being, interactive environmental planning, aesthetic quality in urban planning, aesthetic footprint, and ecological aesthetics. The authors of this part also engage with many topical questions in environmental and everyday aesthetics. For example, Yuriko Saito’s idea of green aesthetics as well as Allen Carlson’s science-based model of the aesthetic appreciation of nature are critically examined.

Abstract

What do we know about inputs and potential of legumes in terms of the sustainability of agricultural and food systems? How can they be used to reduce the damage and maximise the benefits for the environment, agriculture and man? This reference work fuels the reflection on protein sources, nitrogen management in France and the relationship between legumes and sustainability.

Abstract

Pesticides are today the subject of considerable environmental issues. This work presents the outcome of fifteen years of research financed by the French Ministry of Ecology on the reduction in environmental risks from using pesticides. It emphasises especially the transfer of results to support public decisions.
