Abstract

Bivalves, such as clams and oysters, are species having two-valved shells. In the marine ecosystem these species play a unique and essential role. This book examines the ecology of bivalves from an ecosystem or holistic view, taking into consideration their processes, interactions, and components. Studies of bivalves at the physical, organismic, and population levels are presented as foundations for understanding ecosystem processes. Ecology of Marine Bivalves: An Ecosystem Approach explores the potential use of bivalves as indicators and monitors of ecosystem health and describes experiments from the perspective of computer simulations, mesocosm studies, and field manipulation experiments. The theories of many areas of science support the various approaches. Concise reviews and more than 70 tables and figures give you rapid access to synthesized data about these keystone species.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The seventh volume of the Matriculation Book of the University of Vienna includes the period from 1715/16 to 1745/46. It represents the follow-up of the edition of the central student enrollments of the rectors of the University of Vienna, that was initially established in 1377. It is a first-class source for studies of the history of persons and the institution of the University of Vienna, as well as the social history of the scholarly world in the period of enlightenment. The register book includes informations about the scholarly staff and the students. Within 31 years there are 6.764 persons enrolled. In addition, the book contains information on the regional and social origins of university members. Apart from the critical edition of the matriculation text, the volume also includes a list of university rectors. Moreover it is accompanied by indices of persons and places.

Abstract

The first volume of the University of Vienna Matriculation Book of the Faculty of Law includes the period from 1402 to 1442. It represents the oldest record of the history of scholarly lawyers in the German language area, and is a first-class source for studies of the history of persons and the institution of the Faculty of Law, as well as the social history of late medieval scholarly world. The register book ("album") of the Faculty of Law contains not only the registration at entry, but also the date of graduation. Therefore one can determine the duration of studies in each case, and the most important data on the curriculum of enrolled students are preserved. In addition, the book contains information on the regional and social origins of university students and on the level of their respective matriculation fees. Apart from the critical edition of the matriculation text, the volume also includes a list of deans . Moreover it is accompanied by indices of persons and places, as well as information about contemporary sources on the University of Vienna.

Abstract

"In mechanica Aristotelis problemata exercitationes" written by Bernardino Baldi is reprinted with an introduction and commentary as the third volume of the series "Sources of the Max Planck Research Library for the History and Development of Knowledge." The volume is also freely available in electronic form as an open-access publication on the Internet at www.edition-open-access.de.The "Exercitationes" were first published in 1621, four years after the death of the author. The work belongs to the long tradition of studies on the pseudo-Aristotelian "Mechanical Problems" developed during the Renaissance but, unlike most other works written during the sixteenth century, it takes a critical position against the theoretical approach of the pseudo-Aristotelian text. The "Exercitationes" display a systematic application of Archimedean principles to the explanation of the questions discussed in "Mechanical Problems" illustrating the patchwork character of preclassical mechanics. Moreover, Baldi's work presents lengthy digressions that considerably widen the boundaries of mechanics.

Abstract

The "Exercitationes" were first published in 1621, four years after the death of the author. Abstract

In January 1957, a group of physicists from several countries met at the University of North Carolina to discuss the role of gravitation in physics. The program was divided into two broad sections: unquantized and quantized general relativity. The first section included a review of classical relativity, its experimental tests, the initial value problem, gravitational radiation, equations of motion, and unified field theory. The second section included a discussion of the motivation for quantization, the problem of measurement, and the actual techniques for quantization. In both sections the relationship of general relativity to fundamental particles was discussed. In addition there was a session devoted to cosmological questions. A large part of the discussions is reproduced in the present report in an abridged form, followed by a conference summary statement by P. G. Bergmann. The Chapel Hill conference also marked the establishment of the Institute of Field Physics, directed by Bryce and Cécile DeWitt. The conference was the inaugural conference of this institute.
