Abstract

In the 'life' of technical objects and infrastructures repair and maintenance are central practices, both economically and culturally. This book foregrounds these activities, rarely examined until now, and looks into the forms of knowledge of different cultures of repair. In the process, the expertise and political ambitions of human actors receive as much consideration as the internal dynamics of the objects themselves. The articles focus on practices such as watch or computer repair, as well as on spaces such as the home, the hospital, the Repair Cafe, and the city of the 'Global South'. In addition, the book also investigates the extent to which repair and repair-friendly design can contribute to more sustainability.

Abstract

Across the world, more and more DIY initiatives are cropping up, in which a diversity of matters and problems are being collectively dealt with. In these collaborative contexts – located away from the market and the state - an understanding of living together and urbanity based around democracy is tested out, and at the same time, ecologically and socially responsible solutions are being sought for fundamental forms of provision of food, of energy, and for making all manner of technology accessible. In the process, fascinating new forms of collective production, repairing and swapping arise which challenge the industrial logic of the 20th century, even turn them on their head. This book is dedicated to the visionary power of these promising innovative practices, and at the same time, provides a societal categorisation of the new `laboratories' of societal transformation. Abstract

Time and again one reads that manufacturers deliberately design their products in such a way that they break prematurely. The victims: the customers. Many manufacturers, however, want to delay the wear. How do you go about planning for obsolescence? The book presents for the first time the view and experiences of those who develop, design and manufacture products. The contributions deal with reparability as a business model, product lifecycle management, obsolescence as a management topic, the role of state influence and the social drivers of the short-lived consumer goods.
