Abstract

Education is and will probably remain the all-dominant topic of the 21st century. The consequences of a lack of or exclusion from education must be correspondingly dramatic. In the economic and sociological labour market literature, the same dominant explanatory pattern, the displacement mechanism, can now be found for the increasing disadvantage of low-skilled persons: the low-skilled are "displaced" by the better-skilled. In contrast to the theoretical considerations and empirical analyses in this book, the significance of processes of increasing discreditation, social impoverishment and stigmatization is worked out and emphasized - it is therefore more a matter of social inequality than of "displacement".

Abstract

Why have the training opportunities for students of the German Hauptschule - the secondary school with the lowest level of graduation possible in Germany - changed since the 1950s? The author does not focus the explanation on young people, to whom deficits are often ascribed. Instead, she examines the role of employers in the segmentation of the training market and the increasing restriction of career opportunities.

Abstract

With the "opening of universities" to "non-traditional students", education policy demands for far-reaching reforms are addressed to German universities. How do universities meet these demands and what curricular-didactical considerations result from them? The authors take up this question as a productive moment in development-oriented action based on didactics of higher education and explore the potential - both for changes and for stabilisations in the area of higher education teaching - in an exemplary manner. Against the background of the framework conditions of a university of applied sciences, they discuss the possibilities of a target group-specific, curricular-didactic further development of part-time, social-scientifically oriented study programmes and present further reflections.
