Abstract

Between 1810 and 1813 the Master of Ceremonies Count Gundacker Heinrich Wurmbrand drafted an „Etiquette-Normale für den österreichischen Kaiserhof“, which is a unique source for the reconstruction of everyday ceremonies at the Viennese court after the Napoleonic era. The text define the role of the Emperor, the ranks of the members of his entourage and the status of the court servants in a complex, symbolic system of relations. Court and court society are presented as a well-ordered mechanism to celebrate the dignity and rank of the Austrian Empire invented in 1804 and to legitimize it through symbolic communication.

Abstract

The so-called “Wiener Handwerksordnungsbuch” was compiled by Ulrich Hirssauer, town clerk of Vienna, in the year 1430 and provides a multifaceted picture of everyday life in 15th- and 16th-century Vienna. It not only contains craft ordinances, but also gives information about the organisation of late medieval Viennese marketplaces, the arrangement of civic sentries, the growing and serving of wine and also about both the urban administration and the vicissitude of Viennese history in the 15th century, as numerous official and civic oaths were registered in the manuscript over time. To facilitate the use of the introduction and the edition, the present book comes with a glossary of words, which are not generally intelligible nowadays, and provides indices of persons, places and subjects.

Abstract

Poverty and beggars have always been a part of the city of Vienna. Between 1443 and 1693 only beggars with beggars’ badges („Stadtzeichen“) were authorised to beg. The contextualisation, edition and analysis of a beggars’ directory (“Stadtzeichnerbuch”) dating from the seventeenth century (1678–1685) reveals the living circumstances of more than 900 poor people which can hardly be found in other sources.
