Abstract

"Sustainable development and its expression in terms of participation by local stakeholders in future choices in regions where they live or work have become topical issues. Companion modelling is particularly original among methods to set up participative approaches around the sustainable management of natural renewable resources. The aim of this book is to familiarise the reader with the companion modelling approach, by presenting the scientific posture that is its foundation, its methods and tools and the special place for models. It also explains how to incorporate several decision scales, take power games into account and lastly assess the effects on the people involved in using this approach. This work is based on concrete examples taken from 27 cases studied by the researcher group and on educational tools. It is intended for researchers into rural development and renewable resources as well as students and teachers."

Abstract

Where are we today in the place of women in family agricultures compared with men, in both Northern and Southern countries. Based on very diverse field studies, this book exposes the need to analyse family agricultures from the perspective of masculine-feminine relations and social constructions that organise these power ratios. It addresses in succession the social management of male-female relationships in agriculture, gender inequalities in the definition and impact of agricultural and environmental policies and lastly the different approaches of gender in the food systems.

Abstract

What resources underpin the development of a territory? What does territorial management of resources mean? What specific characteristics and opportunities does territorial organization offer for agricultural production, regulation of sectors, and services? How are territorial public policies conceived and applied? But also, what are the limits of the territorial approach? How does a territorial approach refashion the frameworks of intervention for development? How do we implement and reinvent mechanisms to provide support, build skills, and promote production and good governance? How do we mobilize information systems, apprehend territorial dynamics, and encourage decentralized planning? Using a wide diversity of case studies, the book explores how actors, scales and scopes of intervention interact in the development of rural spaces in the countries of the Global South, both at the local level and in the global perspective of the objectives of sustainable development. The book brings together the experiences and views of more than 150 researchers and experts from CIRAD, AFD and their partners. It is aimed at researchers, engineers, professionals in the countries of the Global South, as well as students and the wider public.

Abstract

This book presents a three-phase methodology for the efficient diagnosis of “dry dikes” (i.e. dykes built above normal water levels of the rivers that provide protection at time of flood). Although the principles of the method described herein were developed on dikes in France, they may be applied with confidence to flood protection dikes and levees in other countries around the world. Phase one of the methodology involves gathering as much information as possible about the dike from archive analysis, interviews with managers and inspections of the structures. This phase is essential in ensuring the high quality of the final diagnosis. The main aim of the second phase – the geophysical survey – is to divide up the dike into zones in order to identify sections of the structure that are vulnerable to irreversible damage during a flood because of their particular physical characteristics. The geophysical methods used must be capable of surveying over long distances and of revealing heterogeneities both within the dike and in its foundation. The third phase – the geotechnical investigation – consists of various tests and drillings that ascertain in situ the principal mechanical characteristics and properties of the materials that make up the structure. This guide is invaluable for anyone involved in dike safety

Abstract

Set up during the food crisis in the aftermath of the Second World War, France's National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) was founded on the notion that public scientific research into the management of life in all its multifarious forms would be of major importance for rebuilding France's position in the world. This book, based on original documentation and testimonies of the main protagonists, explores the 70 years of the institute's life, focusing on the interactions between science and politics.

Abstract

This book focuses on innovation in the agri-food system and the new paradigm drawn by bioeconomic approaches and principles. It draws on contributions presented during the 29th EURAGRI annual conference held in Luxemburg (September 2015) as well as on other workshops organised as part of EURAGRI. EURAGRI is an informal gathering of EU research and higher education organisations and ministries interested in agri-food research. It works as a platform of exchange and discussion on topics of common interest pertaining to the organisation, orientation and outlook of agri-food research in Europe in connection with global changes.
