Abstract

The interpretation of aerial and satellite imagery requires significant experience and expert knowledge and therefore is mainly performed by professional image interpreters. So far, automatic methods are not able to provide comparable results but they can be used to support the manual image interpretation process. This work shows how the benefits of manual and automatic image interpretation can be adequately combined in an interactive image interpretation system.

Abstract

Underwater images are most often degraded by color shifts, blurring and brightening effects. The presented approach is based on a problem-specific physical model of under water image formation. Thereon, methods of image restoration and image data retrieval are presented, which invert image degradation processes. Hence, it is possible to enhance image quality with model knowledge under different image acquisition conditions.

Abstract

In robotic beating heart surgery, a remote-controlled robot can be used to carry out the operation while automatically canceling out the heart motion. The surgeon controlling the robot is shown a stabilized view of the heart. First, we consider the use of directional statistics for estimation of the phase of the heartbeat. Second, we deal with reconstruction of a moving and deformable surface. Third, we address the question of obtaining a stabilized image of the heart.

Abstract

Multidimensional imaging techniques provide powerful ways to examine various kinds of scientific questions. The routinely produced data sets in the terabyte-range, however, can hardly be analyzed manually and require an extensive use of automated image analysis. The present work introduces a new concept for the estimation and propagation of uncertainty involved in image analysis operators and new segmentation algorithms that are suitable for terabyte-scale analyses of 3D+t microscopy images.

Abstract

In photon science more and more data are taken. It is not possible anymore to store and process all data offline. In this book, we explore strategies for handling this large amount of data. A neural network as well as techniques from image processing are used to efficiently categorize and select useful data. We also indicate why many sophisticated algorithms cannot be used in this context. In addition, a prototype for data selection is presented, discussed, and benchmarked.

Abstract

In the proposed system the environment of an industrial robot is captured through algorithms of machine learning. Thus, objects and human actions are determined. Based on semantic analysis situational knowledge is inferred and dynamic risk assessment as well as robotic behaviour are concluded. Consequently, this provides the foundation for a reactive robot system for achieving efficient and safe human-robot-cooperation.

Abstract

The aim of this work was the development of new image processing methods for the analysis and optimization of rotary kiln processes. It is shown how the newly developed methods can be employed to analyze certain areas and effects of rotary kiln processes. Thereby gained new process information can be used in the process control to optimize rotary kiln processes in terms of economic and environmental objectives.

Abstract

This work presents two image-based inspection approaches for the quality evaluation of cylinder bore surfaces. In the first algorithm, metal folds on plateau-honed surfaces are inspected with scanning electron microscopy. An edge-aware structure tensor is proposed for feature extraction and localization of surface defects. The second algorithm uses a morphgraphical method for detecting graphite grains in optical micrographs. Based on the inspection results, quality parameters are proposed.

Abstract

Mobile robotic systems need to perceive their surroundings in order to act independently. In this work a perception framework is developed which interprets the data of a binocular camera in order to transform it into a compact, expressive model of the environment. This model enables a mobile system to move in a targeted way and interact with its surroundings. It is shown how the developed methods also provide a solid basis for technical assistive aids for visually impaired people.

Abstract

While the spectral information contained in hyperspectral images is rich, the spatial resolution of such images is in many cases very low. Many pixel spectra are mixtures of pure materials’ spectra and therefore need to be decomposed into their constituents. This work investigates new decomposition methods taking into account spectral, spatial and global 3D adjacency information. This allows for faster and more accurate decomposition results.
