Abstract

This work provides an economic and ecological assessment of the application of biochar as soil amendment and identifies important influencing factors. Therefore, a multi-stage model including various methods, e.g. an ecosystem simulation of the soil, is developed. The assessment model is based on material and energy flow balances along the overall value chain – from biochar production to its application as soil amendment.

Abstract

As a contribution to environmental protection, the EU tyre label was introduced. However, the best label value does not necessarily imply the lowest rolling resistance under real operating conditions. This research work aims to develop a model to predict the rolling losses of car tyres based on standardized rolling resistance measurements. Using this model, the rolling resistance at variable operating parameters will be predicted.

Abstract

For ecological und economic reasons, special attention is paid to the energy balance of rail-bound, local, direct current-based transport systems. With the tram and urban railway network of Karlsruhe being used as an example, 16 simulation scenarios with different measures for energy optimization are analysed in a coupled computation of driving cycles and energy flows.

Abstract

Scope of this work is to determine cycle time formulas for packing in distribution centres. No such formulas exist today, even if it is the second most important process after picking. Based on examining packing, morphological boxes showing time influencing parameters are derived. The most significant parameters are identified using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Cycle times are determined and applied to cases. These prove that the formulas can be used to calculate the time required for packing.

Abstract

This book investigates the fatigue mechanisms and crack initiation of Ni, Al and Cu on a small-scale in the Very High Cycle Fatigue regime by means of innovative fatigue experimentation. A novel custom-built resonant fatigue setup showed that the sample resonant frequency changes with increasing cycle number due to fatigue damage. Mechanisms such as slip band formation have been observed. Cyclic hardening, vacancy and oxidation formation may be considered as early fatigue mechanisms.

Abstract

Main objective of this work is to develop, by systematic variation of the chemical composition, and TMP, 14% Cr nano-structured ferritic alloys with significantly improved high-temperature properties compared to currently available ODS alloys. Application of state-of-the-art characterization tools shall lead to an integrated understanding of structure-property correlation and the formation mechanism of nanoparticles.

Abstract

The Helmholtz Association funded the ""Large-Scale Data Management and Analysis"" portfolio theme from 2012-2016. Four Helmholtz centres, six universities and another research institution in Germany joined to enable data-intensive science by optimising data life cycles in selected scientific communities. In our Data Life cycle Labs, data experts performed joint R&D together with scientific communities. The Data Services Integration Team focused on generic solutions applied by several communities.

Abstract

The grain microstructure and damage mechanisms at the grain level are the key factors that influence fatigue of metals at small scales. This is addressed in this work by establishing a new micro-mechanical model for prediction of multiaxial high cycle fatigue (HCF) at a length scale of 5-100?m. The HCF model considers elasto-plastic behavior of metals at the grain level and microstructural parameters, specifically the grain size and the grain orientation.
