Ultrasound excitation of structural steel members leads to localised energy dissipation at existent fatigue cracks and thus allows for thermographic flaw detection. Essential effects on the defect-selective heating, such as flaw size, plate thickness, crack mouth opening or static preload, are systematically investigated. Laser vibrometry measurements of the crack edges, theoretical modelling of frictional heating and numerical simulations contribute to the understanding of the involved physics.

A high capacity adhesively bonded joint of hollow sections in steel construction is developed in the scope of this thesis. In particular, the boundary conditions and requirements of the building industry are considered. The load-bearing behaviour of the adhesively bonded joints is determined and analysed with experimental and numerical investigations. The development and validation of a method to predict the load-bearing capacity of adhesively bonded joints emphasises additional features.

Different glue-free sheathing systems made of solid timber panels are developed within the scope of this dissertation. These systems are then evaluated by their usability as sheathing in shear walls based on common structural design principles. Therefore, different shear connectors are developed and tested in small-scale and large-scale experiments. Using computational model for the timber-frames examined in the experiments shear wall test are simulated and a design proposal is developed.

This dissertation deals with the development of a Virtual Reality-based construction site control centre for earth work in consideration of lean management principles. Beside the enhanced availability of information and increased transparency in presentation, a raise in the performance on-site by the use of a digital Kanban system could be proved.

Based on the consolidation of the consignment volume of cooperating building materials traders, the logistics network will be improved and the transport efficiency of the cooperation partners will be increased. In addition to the development, the cooperation model will be evaluated by simulations on the basis of real data and the impact of the cooperation model for the total drive distance of the cooperation partners will be examined.
