Abstract

There is an age-old tradition in linguistics and philosophy to identify the meaning of a entence with its truth-conditions. This can be explained by the fact that linguistic and philosophical investigations are usually carried out in a logical framework that was originally designed to characterize valid reasoning. Indeed, in order to determine whether an argument is valid, it suffices to know the truth-conditions of the premises and conclusion. However, argumentation is neither the sole, nor the primary function of language. One task that language more widely and ordinarily fulfils is to enable the exchange of information between conversational participants. Inquisitive semantics is a new logical framework for the analysis of this fundamental usage of language. Information exchange can be seen as a process of raising and resolving issues. Inquisitive semantics provides a new formal notion of issues, which makes it possible to model various concepts that are crucial for the analysis of linguistic information exchange in a more refined and more principled way than has been possible in previous frameworks. This book provides a detailed exposition of inquisitive semantics, and demonstrates its benefits with a range of applications in the semantic analysis of questions, coordination, modals, conditionals, and intonation.

Abstract

Electronic documents frequently include contributions from different human and non-human sources. The Web, for instance, offers ever-changing content and services which can perform activities during document creation. This thesis introduces a solution for collaborative document creation which maps contributions of human and non-human participants to software services. The joint flexible composition and coordination of these services leads to a novel understanding of dynamic Web-based documents.

Abstract

Modern cities cannot be imagined without traffic lights controlling the road network. To handle the network's changing demands efficiently, the signal plan specification needs to be shifted from the design time to the run-time of a signal system. The generic observer/controller architecture proposed for Organic Computing facilitates this shift. A two-levelled learning mechanism optimises signal plans on-line while a distributed coordination mechanism establishes green waves in the road network.

Abstract

The author presents a general view on sports training, its eriodization and the role of coordination in the initial stages of preparation in volleyball. He also deals with inter-gender differences in levels of such abilities, describing motor tests for the assessment of coordination potential and providing the reader with standards for the development of talented players. Based on the nature of volleyball, the author analyses key features of sports performance. Coordination abilities, especially in the period of puberty, play an important role in the creation of coordination basis – prerequisites for the development of physical fitness and acquisition of motor skills. Based on the results of his own research, as well as studies conducted by international sports scientists, he offers a model for the development of coordination abilities in volleyball. This method is recommended for coaches to improve their professional work in volleyball classes and schools, and in sports clubs. In the long-term, application of the proposed model should contribute to the improvement of players‘ performance in competition.

Abstract

The coordination chemistry of the s-block metals spans diverse fields, ranging from shielded coordination compounds over hydride to organometallic complexes for diverse applications. New developments pertain, not only to the lithium and magnesium chemistry with inspiring examples, such as heterobimetallic or heteroleptic complexes with special reactivity patterns, but the heavy s-block metals have progressively gained attention in various fields. Subvalent magnesium(I) derivatives are increasingly being used for reduction reactions, turbo-Grignard reagents show enhanced reactivity and tolerance toward functional groups, hydrides act as hydrogen storage materials, heavy Grignard reagents are available by straight forward procedures—just to name a few examples. Quantum chemical calculations deal with unique bonding situations and the relevance of d-orbital participation has been discussed to understand structure-reactivity relationships. Especially the complexes of the heavy alkaline earth metals are catalytically active in diverse reactions, promoting hydrofunctionalization reactions and Lewis acid catalysis. This Special Issue aims to highlight the structural and chemical diversity of s-block metal complexes, as well as the broad field of applications.
