Abstract

Greenhouse-gas emissions have become one of the most impacting environmental issues in today’s society. A rapidly increasing trend in global CO2emissions particularly since the early nineties (23.64% since 1990) has led to the generation of about 50,000 million tons of CO2–equivalent (eqv) worldwide in 2010. According to mainstream climate experts, the increasing concentration of greenhouse-gases is having a warming effect on the world climate. To slow down global warming, there is a global focus on reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. Life cycle assessment in green building implementation is the focus of this Special Issue.

Abstract

After description of the uranium / plutonium fuel cycle results are reported for various isotopic compositions of reactor-grade plutonium for usability in hypothetical nuclear explosive devices. It is shown that it is mainly thermal analyses, besides neutron physics analyses, which indicate the limits of concentration of the Pu-238 plutonium isotope. Above these limits, such hypothetical nuclear explosive devices are not feasible technically. In the light of this finding, future proliferation-proof fuel cycles are proposed which make use of recent methods of actinide transmutation.The author is honorary professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and emeritus director of the former Institute for Neutron Physics and Reactor Engineering of the former Karlsruhe Research Center. For many years he was a member and, for some time, chairman of the German Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (RSK).He is a member of the European Nuclear Society (ENS) and a member and fellow of the American Nuclear Society (ANS).

Abstract

Remotely sensed data are nowadays commonly used for regional/global monitoring of hydrological variables including soil moisture, rainfall, water levels, flood extent, evapotranspiration or land water storage, as well as the forcing, calibration and assimilation into hydrodynamic, hydrological and hydrometeorological models. In the years to come, recent and future satellite sensors, some of them specifically designed for hydrological purposes, will provide systematic observations of hydrological parameters (e.g., surface and sub-surface storage and flux) at high spatial and temporal resolutions. This will offer new applications for the hydrological community. This book presents reviews and recent advances of general interest regarding the use of remote sensing for hydrology. The chapters are related to any hydrological reservoir (e.g., surface storage, soil moisture, groundwater, etc.) or flux (e.g., rainfall, evapotranspiration, discharge, etc.), the integration of satellite data into hydrological models, and the improvements to hydrology that can be expected from future satellite missions.

Abstract

The book contains a collection of articles dealing with how the extraction of mineral resources can be considered in environmental analyses such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The consumption of resources, e.g., metals, is increasing strongly worldwide. This is associated with more energy use; environmental pollution; and social, economic, and political consequences. An increase is also expected for the coming decades. At the same time, modern products and technologies, even in the field of renewable energies, require a large number of critical raw materials. A crucial question here is the exhaustibility of natural resources. What is the relevance of resource depletion today? Must a geological shortage of metals be expected in the foreseeable future? How could such a thing be considered in the LCA of products and weighed against other environmental aspects? The articles in question have been written over the past three years by leading experts in both geology and environmental sciences and show the breadth of the controversial discussion.

Abstract

In 1847, the Austrian painter Leopold Kupelwieser (1796-1862) was commissioned to execute a fresco cycle in the Ceremonial Hall of the Niederösterreichische Statthalterei (Lower Austrian Government Building, Vienna), depicting scenes from Austrian history. Iconographic aspects of each painting, using pictorial and literary sources as well as pointing out biographical connections and artistic forebears and influences, are being discussed. The complex interplay between art technology and conceptual statements manifests itself particularly articulate in the focal point of cartoon and fresco; accordingly, this study approaches Kupelwiesers work through the description of the materials he used and the way he processed them.

Abstract

Rainwater harvesting (RWH) is the most popular alternative water source in many urban, peri-urban, and rural areas. Although rainwater is fresh in nature, it gets polluted from atmospheric contaminants, roof catchments, and the RWH system itself. The research questions which are the most relevant to RWH system include the optimum rainwater tank size for a given location and set of users, water quality from a RWH system, financial viability of a RWH system, and state regulations on the use of water from a RWH system. You are invited to submit a technical paper to this Special Issue of Water on these aspects of a RWH system.

Abstract

Vitamin K comprises a group of highly lipophilic molecules that possess a common 2-methyl-1, 4-naphthoquinone nucleus and a variable polyisoprenoid side chain at the 3-position that can vary in both length and degree of saturation. In nature, these forms are found as a single plant form (phylloquinone or vitamin K1) and a series of bacterial forms (menaquinones or vitamin K2). Vitamin K acts as a cofactor for a microsomal enzyme, γ-carboxyglutamyl carboxylase (GGCX), that serves to transform specific peptide-bound glutamate residues found in certain specialized proteins to γ-carboxyglutamate (Gla). This posttranslational protein modification is the only firmly established biochemical function of vitamin K. The resultant vitamin K-dependent (VKD) proteins, or Gla proteins, are diverse in both structure and function and are found in many cell and tissue types. The best-known example of the health role of vitamin K-mediated protein γ-carboxylation is in the synthesis of several VKD blood coagulation proteins, which are essential for the maintenance of extracellular haemostasis. An overt deficiency of vitamin K results in bleeding and although rare in most populations, vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB) in early infancy has potentially devastating and fatal consequences because bleeding commonly occurs within the brain. For this reason it is recommended that all newborn infants should receive vitamin K prophylaxis. On the other hand, the deliberate lowering of circulating VKD-coagulation factors by the therapeutic administration of vitamin K antagonists (VKA) such as warfarin is used to treat and prevent thrombotic disorders. The functions of most non-coagulation Gla proteins remain uncertain, but are suspected to play roles in processes as diverse as bone and cardiovascular mineralization, vascular integrity, energy metabolism, immune response, brain metabolism, and in cellular growth, survival, and signalling. For the most part, extrapolations of the cellular properties of extrahepatic Gla proteins to tangible health benefits are unclear or fuzzy, as are the health consequences of their undercarboxylation. However, there is evidence that higher nutritional intakes of vitamin K are required to enable maximal γ-carboxylation of certain extrahepatic Gla proteins, such as osteocalcin and matrix Gla protein (MGP). Osteocalcin and MGP currently represent the best-studied extrahepatic Gla proteins with respect to their putative roles in bone and cardiovascular health, respectively. In addition, osteocalcin may play a role in regulating energy metabolism. Much current interest focuses on the role of MGP as an inhibitor of vascular mineralization, particularly in renal disease and in patients taking VKA. Interestingly, although VKA have been in clinical use for decades, recent evidence suggests that they may cause unintended health consequences by disrupting the function of MGP resulting in calcification and loss of the functional integrity of the vessel wall. Apart from the role of vitamin K in γ-carboxylation there is evidence that some forms, particularly menaquinone-4 (MK-4), have a direct influence on cellular functions.This Special Issue of Nutrients focuses on advances that extend our knowledge of the biochemical functions and health roles played by both the micronutrient vitamin K and its target Gla proteins. The scope of potential topics is wide and may include studies in population and patient groups, animal models and at the cellular level. Examples include the presentation, diagnosis, incidence, causes, and prevention of deficiency syndromes, of which the most obvious is bleeding in infancy, but also extends to other putative roles of vitamin K such as in bone and cardiovascular health. In trying to define extrahepatic functions of vitamin K it is important to obtain evidence of pathophysiological signatures that may derive from chronic suboptimal vitamin K intakes or as a consequence of vitamin K antagonists. An important related question is whether the pathophysiology can be ameliorated or prevented by judicious vitamin K supplementation. Equally important to our understanding of the human physiology of vitamin K are studies that define the relative functional importance of individual vitamers and how differences in their availability and metabolism affect their biological activity. Recent highlights in metabolism include the delineation of the importance of vitamin K epoxide reductase (VKOR) in maintaining vitamin K status and the intriguing hypothesis that its paralog VKOR-like 1 enzyme (VKORL1) may serve an antioxidant function. Another highlight illustrating the importance of metabolism to vitamin K function is the discovery that the enzyme UbiA prenyltransferase-containing domain 1 (UBIAD1) participates in the cellular conversion of phylloquinone to MK-4 with menadione as a metabolic intermediate.
