Abstract

Serious illness prevents many students from attending school on a regular basis and can lead to long-term absence from the classroom. The consequent isolation impedes socialization and educational exchange between homebound students and their schoolmates, as well as interaction with their teachers. Moreover, these students face serious difficulties when they eventually manage to return to school. All these factors slow down homebound students’ learning progress and weaken their sense of belonging to their peer group. In response to these issues, Italy’s Ministry of Education (MIUR), National Research Council (CNR), and the TIM Foundation set up a project in 2013 named TRIS (Networked Technologies and Socio-educational Inclusion). The main aim of the project is to develop a flexible and scalable intervention model for integrating homebound leaners. This is based on active and engaging learning approaches and is designed for application to a wide variety of long–term absence situations. The main pillar of the project is the so-called “Inclusive Hybrid Classroom”, a special blending of physical and digital learning spaces. By facilitating direct engagement in class activities, irrespective of the students’ actual location, this kind of classroom heightens the sense for everyone that the homebound student is actively present in the classroom.

Abstract

The book contains the proceedings of the European conference and review «Products and experiences for intercultural dialogue: Best practices for social inclusion in Italy and Europe" held in Florence on 18 January 2008 in the framework of the project «Social Inclusion: How Leonardo da Vinci Projects Contribueted to Make it Effective». With a social and pedagogic/educational approach, the text is designed to make a specific contribution to the knowledge and evaluation of quality products, carefully selected by European experts, regarding three fundamental aspects of social inclusion and intercultural dialogue: learning on the part of the immigrants of the language and culture of the host country; reception and inclusion in the workplace; the protection of the health and safety of the immigrants.

Abstract

"Facts and processes of the contemporary world challenge different knowledge to reflect on the meaning of actions, relationships, communication of women and men, as cultural actors or decision-makers in order not to be subjected to them uncritically. A way to respond to this challenge can be working on the topic of the limit, shedding light on the contradictions it shows. The problem given by human limitation - challanged by unlimited desires - is certainly not the exclusive prerogative of our age, nor the univocal consequence of the social, cultural, techonlogical and economics developmentent. Therefore the meanings related to concept of limit allow us to address with realism the relationship between the human’s instances and the social and cultural conditions generated by contemporary scenarios where our daily life takes place. The purpose of this volume is to analyse, through the proposals of authors who work in different research fields, the meaning of the physical and symbolic limit, reflecting on existential, social and cultural experiences that can be interpreted as the consequence of a different shadows of human limits. This is a way to experience the use of concepts and semantics which allow us to analyse the processes that are responsible for the breakdown of the balance between subjectivity and context, as well as contributing to the reconciliation between scientific production and moral feeling."

Abstract

The volume is based upon the pedagogical intercultural project "L'Aquila oltre i confini", a set of educational programs on the active and participatory citizenship, on the prevention and the overcoming of all forms of discrimination and intolerance. The path propose methodologies that can be contextualized within schools and universities and used for training of educational and social professionals.
