Abstract

Since the 1970s, highly educated families in Austria have employed Au-pairs for taking care of their children. Why have these families preferred Au-pairs to kindergartens with qualified teachers? Were Au-pairs just a flexible substitute or did they have additional functions in the family? Which social and political climate has favoured this private form of childcare? The empirical basis of the work was the documentation of one of the major Austrian Au-pair agencies for the period 1978 - 2000, particularly 298 self-descriptions from guest families and the agency´s annual reports. The material was supplemented by interviews with ten guest families and by interviews with two experts. Thus is possible to analyze the socio-demographic characteristics of guest-families in Vienna and its suburbs, their motivations for taking Au-pairs, and their expectations. The findings indicate that Au-pairs usually serve several roles within the families: for instance, one very important role is to "double" mothers in order to free their minds to continue their social and work life. The pair system is also discussed in view of its two historic threads: one is a long European "education abroad" tradition for rather upper class children. The other thread is a "work-migration" tradition for lower class childs that had to go to cities to work as domestic servants. Which of the two traditions dominates the Au-pair market depends on the economic situation of the countries from which the Au-pairs come. Consequently, the economic and political changes around 1989 in Eastern Europe have had major impacts on the characteristics of Au-pair jobs in Austria

Abstract

Even 30 years after the birth of the first "artificially produced baby Louise Brown in 1978, the desire for a child remains unfulfilled for many couples. Their hopes are to modern techniques of assisted reproduction. Reproductive medicine has since made enormous progress and opens up new opportunities. With these opportunities, however, are also linked new challenges, their moral and legal implications are considerable.

Abstract

In the complete area of institutional child care a significant under-representation of males can be determined throughout Europe. The proportion of male child care workers lies below five percent; Austria is well below the European average with 0,8 %. Literature about men in child care services is not readily available; empirical research is frequently based on individual case studies. We know very little about how men obtain these jobs, about the motives and experiences of men in child care institutions, about their biographical particulars (contacts with men and fathers) and how men cope with the contradictions and conflicts inherent in a supposedly 'typically female' job/ profession and their male identities.

Abstract

The current political discourse on the "further development and control of child and youth welfare" attempts to discredit and repress outpatient help for upbringing. The present "plea" interferes professionally and politically in this debate. The authors provide a critical assessment of the current situation of child and youth welfare and in particular of educational assistance and trace the process of the debate on the "further development and control of educational assistance". On the basis of detailed description and analysis of the two basic approaches to action in social work (social work in and with the social space on the one hand and individual casework, e.g. educational assistance, on the other), it deals with the question of whether the controversy alleged by politicians between the two approaches to action is technically justified. In this context, the two approaches to action are presented in their history and development and in their different conceptions. In addition to a clear plea for the preservation and consistently professional design of educational assistance in the context of life-world orientation, this also leads to the realisation that social work in general - and especially in times of neo-liberalisation of the social - is subject to the risk of individualisation. On the other hand, within both approaches it is also possible today to fend off this tendency and to act as a critical force in this society. In addition to the technical, ideological and political examination of the new control intentions of politics vis-à-vis aid for education, this book contains detailed descriptions and discussions on various individual topics, among others: - Technical characteristics, action orientations and process design of the action approaches "Outpatient individual case assistance" and "Work in and with the social space" (8.4 and 9.3, 9.4) - What shares does social work itself have in its partly unprofessional state? (Section 4.4) - Presentation and discussion of the concept of "social space orientation" (8.5) - Individualisation: What is this? How can it be avoided? (Chapter 8)

Abstract

The author deals empirically with the question of what role social relationships with parents and teachers play in motivating children and adolescents to learn and perform. In particular, the question of the long-term development of achievement motivation over a period of 20 years is at the centre of attention, partly determined by the prevailing social bond in adolescence to the persons referred to and the achievement motivation of the young people themselves.
