Abstract

This work deals with intertextual theories and investigates narrative texts (by Wieland, Novalis, Chamisso, Storm, Andersen and Thomas Mann) from the Enlightenment of the 18th century to Classical Modernism of the early 20th century. In addition to the fairytale requisites, the less obvious fairytale-like text structures, which show a connection between different literary genres (novella/novel and fairytale) and a confrontation between the fairytale-like and the fictitious-realistic, will also be examined. The relationship between the writing process of fairytale adaptation and literary modernity - a literary modernity that reflects a social modernity characterized by its social ambivalence and plurality (modernity as a macro epoch after Anke Lohmeier and Dirk von Petersdorff) - will be shown. The six narrative texts - Die Abentheuer des Don Sylvio von Rosalva, Die Lehrlinge zu Sais, Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte, Der Schimmelreiter, Peer im Glück (as an excursion and outlook into contemporary European literature) and Königliche Hoheit - with their diversity of layers of meaning are regarded as modern narrative texts and represent various milestones in the development of the concept of modernity.

Abstract

xamined in this study. Subsequently, section 4.2 analyzes Ritter’s involvement in debates concerning the concept of value as contested in particular by Carl Schmitt. Ritter supports the critique of the value concept philosophically but does not follow the political and politico-theological implications of Schmitt. Accordingly, authors like Lübbe and Böckenförde refer to the thought of Carl Schmitt in an explicitly liberalizing way. Aside from the discussion of the philosophy of value, this requires a closer look at the concept of Political Theology as it is subject of the debate of Schmitt and Hans Blumenberg. Section 4.3 eventually concentrates on the controversies concerning the concept of religion and its philosophical importance. Functionalism and substantialism are keywords in this discussion that within the group of Ritter’s former students is particularly associated with Robert Spaemann. His reasoning concerning Lübbe’s concept of religion indicates a farther-reaching critique of Ritter’s approach and modernity in general. All these aspects show that there are different ways of answering the tasks and questions Ritter formulated concerning philosophy, either positively in adoption of or negatively in distinction to his own approach. His theoretical ambivalences led the former students of his Collegium Philosophicum to develop various methods of differentiating his positions. Section 4.4 finally resumes aforementioned aspects in reference to post-war German debates on the question of religious presuppositions of liberal-democratic politics, particularly concerning Böckenförde’s notable insight that the liberal and secular state for its own sake relies on presuppositions it cannot guarantee.

Abstract

It is well known that Theodor W. Adorno’s aesthetic theory is grounded in his profound musical knowledge. The importance of music for Jean-François Lyotard, however, has not been adequately recognized until today; neither has the fact that Lyotard was strongly influenced by Adorno. Tracing back the development of Lyotard’s thought from his “pagan” beginnings to his late conception of an informal art, the book intends to initiate an adequate reception of Lyotard’s œuvre from a musicological viewpoint. Moreover, as a first comprehensive comparison of Lyotard‘s and Adorno’s theories on art, the study contributes to the exploration of Critical Theory’s reception in France.

Abstract

Richard Schaukal was in contact with some of literary modernism’s most important protagonists. In his early creative years, he stylized himself as an independent, isolated poet. After World War I, Schaukal became increasingly visible as a cultural critic, using his letters, essays, and literary works to take a stand against the new realities. His biography offers insights into the aesthetic, social, and political developments of his time.

Abstract

Berthold Viertel – a writer and director born in Vienna in 1885 – left an extensive yet fragmentary autobiographical project that had been subject to many substantial changes during his exile and remigration in 1948. In order to examine Viertel’s complex autobiographical writing an innovative biographical approach had to be chosen, interlinking his autobiographical practice between 1917 and 1953 with collective memory and current research in 15 biographical “sites of memory” (lieux de mémoire), encompassing the period between 1860 and 1917. Viertel is shown as a fascinating player in the cultural scene of Vienna 1900 as well as a typical representative of a critical avant-garde, whose lines of tradition he wanted to preserve in his autobiographical writing.

Abstract

The Reformation was essentially a religious renewal of Christianity in Europe. As such, it has contributed decisively, along with the Renaissance and humanism, to the formation of a secular modernity. What exactly was this contribution and how is it to be assessed? Have Reformation movements destroyed the traditional unity of the church and the state, of society and culture, and in so doing instigated the marginalisation of Christianity in Europe? Or have they brought central impulses of Christianity to the fore, without which Western modernity could not developed, and which also characterise a society that understands itself as secular in a plural late modern era? The present volume attempts to shed light on these controversial questions. Criticisms levelled at reformed traditions by the secular modernism standpoint as well as those aimed at European modernity and late-modernity from the camp of reformed thinking are also given a voice.
