Abstract

"Specific studies on the biodiversity or the implementation of the concept of integrated farming imply the need to know how to identify the insect pests or natural enemies. In some countries, growing transgenic, caterpillar-resistant plants, like cotton or corn, has reduced the use of insecticide treatments to control these pests. Some families of bugs like the Pentatomidae and the Miridae have thus become major pests. It is therefore important to improve our understanding of these pests sometimes considered as secondary.People working in the field will find in this book a brief description of the main species of phytophage and predatory bugs found in West Africa, principally in cotton, corn, cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), soy bean and sorghum."

Abstract

Using the concrete example of industrial and food crop legumes in West Africa, the authors reflect on the development of African agriculture in the context of sustainable development. They address exhaustively the biology of legume seed pests (bean weevils) and analyse the various methods of effective and environmentally-friendly control. The work expands on the Integrated Pest Management methods for the bean weevils, the main legume seed pests: simple, inexpensive and low-pollution methods.

Abstract

Abstract

Sorghum is a vital food crop for populations in arid and sub-arid areas. It is also cultivated in temperate areas for animal feed. This book addresses all aspects of the plant (biology, genetics, sensitivity to pests) together with the cultivation systems, harvesting methods and how it is processed into human food. A wealth of illustrations supplement the in-depth, up-to-date knowledge on sorghum, its ecological functions and integrated protection.

Abstract

"For years a basic food of many rural African communities, fonio, an African cereal with very small grains, has now been discovered by urban consumers in major African cities. This book describes the plant and grains and provides information on miscellaneous cultivation and production systems in a variety of environments. It describes the principal traditional fonio production and processing techniques and suggests possible areas for improvement. It shows a keen interest in improved promotion of fonio, by touching on such aspects as preparation of new products, marketing and consumption."

Abstract

"Many efforts have been undertaken to address dysfunctional security sector governance in West Africa. However, security sector reform (SSR) has fallen short of radical – transformational – change to the fundamental structures of power and governance in the region. Looking more closely at specific examples of SSR in six West African countries, Learning from West African Experiences in Security Sector Governance explores both progress and reversals in efforts by national stakeholders and their international partners to positively influence security sector governance dynamics. Written by eminent national experts based on their personal experiences of these reform contexts, this study offers new insights and practical lessons that should inform processes to improve democratic security sector governance in West Africa and beyond. An English translation of this book can be viewed, for free, at: http://dx.doi.org/10.5334/bau"

Abstract

Following the trip to France by the 2009 Nobel Prizewinner in Economic Sciences, Elinor Ostrom, the authors of this work set out her teaching based on her direct interactions with the public. It is an entire critique of conventional economic theories that is expressed and a renewal of social sciences thinking that is taking place. Elinor Ostrom developed an alternative path to the State and the market in her work and experiences; this targeted desirable trajectories for the social and ecological systems.

Abstract

Where are we today in the place of women in family agricultures compared with men, in both Northern and Southern countries. Based on very diverse field studies, this book exposes the need to analyse family agricultures from the perspective of masculine-feminine relations and social constructions that organise these power ratios. It addresses in succession the social management of male-female relationships in agriculture, gender inequalities in the definition and impact of agricultural and environmental policies and lastly the different approaches of gender in the food systems.
