Part of the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, it requires a lasting commitment from all of us. To meet the food and economic needs of growing rural and urban communities, fulfil increasingly demanding consumer requirements, conserve natural resources and adapt to climate change, we have to find new ways of agricultural production. Over the last decade, CIRAD and AFD have conducted experiments in agroecological transitions with farmers, researchers, development agents and policymakers in many countries of the Global South. In this book, they reflect on the future of agroecology as a way for agriculture in the developing world to adapt to global changes and they examine the conditions necessary for a successful agroecological transition."

Agroecology was chosen by INRAE as one of its interdisciplinary scientific foresight studies designed to identify research fronts in response to major societal challenges. Eighty researchers drew up an assessment and proposed research avenues for agroecology. This book summarizes their main conclusions. Agroecology, as a scientific discipline that puts ecology back at the centre of agricultural system design, is now well established. Diversification of living organisms in agroecosystems is a broad objective that is intended to make these systems more robust and resilient. Research in genetics and landscape ecology must be mobilized so that agroecology can use mechanisms from the field to landscape scales. Progress is being made in modelling agroecological systems to better understand the many biotic and abiotic interactions, to predict them, and to begin to manage some of them. Diversification of living organisms in agricultural production (species, varieties, crop rotations, etc.) leads to more varied products. The consequences will be significant on the commodity chains, and more precisely on agri-food systems, from production methods to product consumption. These changes are long-term. The agroecological transition, which is adaptive, co-constructed with all actors, is in itself a research subject, and will rely on experimental devices, farms, and ‘Territories of innovation’.

Respectueux de l'environnement et garantissant une sécurité alimentaire soutenue par la diversification des productions et des revenus qu'ils procurent, les systèmes agroforestiers apparaissent comme un modèle prometteur d'agriculture durable dans les pays du Sud les plus vulnérables aux changements globaux. Cependant, ces systèmes agroforestiers ne peuvent être optimisés qu'à condition de mieux comprendre et de mieux maîtriser les facteurs de leurs productions. L'ouvrage présente un ensemble de connaissances récentes sur les mécanismes biophysiques et socio-économiques qui sous-tendent le fonctionnement et la dynamique des systèmes agroforestiers. Il concerne, d'une part les systèmes agroforestiers à base de cultures pérennes, telles que cacaoyers et caféiers, de régions tropicales humides en Amérique du Sud, en Afrique de l'Est et du Centre, d'autre part les parcs arborés et arbustifs à base de cultures vivrières, principalement de céréales, de la région semi-aride subsaharienne d'Afrique de l'Ouest. Il synthétise les dernières avancées acquises grâce à plusieurs projets associant le Cirad, l'IRD et leurs partenaires du Sud qui ont été conduits entre 2012 et 2016 dans ces régions. L'ensemble de ces projets s'articulent autour des dynamiques des systèmes agroforestiers et des compromis entre les services de production et les autres services socio-écosystémiques que ces systèmes fournissent.

Les bananes à cuire et plantain sont des productionscruciales des pays des zones tropicales humides. Très énergétiques (110 à 120cal/100 g), riches en éléments minéraux et en vitamines, ces aliments répondentaux enjeux de sécurité alimentaire et nutritionnels. Les régions forestièresd'Afrique, d'Amérique latine et d'Asie en produisent 30 millions de tonnes paran (près de 70 % en Afrique) et la consommation moyenne est de 50 à 200kg/hab./an. Conduite le plus souvent dans des modes de production d'agriculturefamiliale, la majeure partie de la production est autoconsommée ou venduelocalement, sous forme de mets très variés, mais peu de produits transforméssont disponibles sur les marchés. Des entrepreneurs investissent dans laproduction de plantain pour l'export vers les États-Unis et l'Europe et pourdes filières orientées vers la fabrication de farines. La multiplicité desusages et la capacité d'adaptation du plantain à des zones agroclimatiquesdiverses sont des atouts de cette filière. Cet ouvrage se réfère plus particulièrement auxrecherches et aux productions d'Afrique subsaharienne.
