Abstract

"Food security, jobs, ecological transition of agricultural production models and consumption patterns... Agroecology could be one of the solutions to meet the future challenges of humanity. Part of the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, it requires a lasting commitment from all of us. To meet the food and economic needs of growing rural and urban communities, fulfil increasingly demanding consumer requirements, conserve natural resources and adapt to climate change, we have to find new ways of agricultural production. Over the last decade, CIRAD and AFD have conducted experiments in agroecological transitions with farmers, researchers, development agents and policymakers in many countries of the Global South. In this book, they reflect on the future of agroecology as a way for agriculture in the developing world to adapt to global changes and they examine the conditions necessary for a successful agroecological transition."

Abstract

Abstract

This book, through its clear explanatory text and admirable illustrations, skilfully lays out the elements of good practice in tropical beekeeping. It explains both traditional techniques using low-cost hives and more advanced methods, pointing out the most appropriate system for the level of investment the beekeeper wishes to make. Existing beekeepers wishing to improve their techniques and those looking to start a new beekeeping enterprise will find the book invaluable.

Abstract

Urged on by new expectations of society, key rural players experiment with different agricultural and food systems, showing proof of creativity and stubbornness faced with the ever-dominant mass production. But what type of sustainable development are societies seeking? How do we choose the innovations to achieve it? What role can research and public policies play to support the emergence of these innovations?

Abstract

Producer organisations are very numerous and active in the farming modernisation process in southern developing countries. This didactic work analyses the advantage of the partnership with producer organisations, how they can be strengthened and their relations with the environment. The questions are made extremely accessible and are illustrated by numerous examples in the southern countries.

Abstract

Abstract

This book focuses on opportunities and challenges in implementing a bioeconomy strategy from a research and education perspective. It draws on contributions presented during the 30th EURAGRI annual conference held in Tartu (Estonia) in September 2016, as well as on other workshops organised as part of EURAGRI. EURAGRI is an informal gathering of EU research and higher education organisations and ministries interested in agri-food research. It works as a platform of exchange and discussion on topics of common interest pertaining to the organisation, orientation and outlook of agri-food research in Europe in connection with global changes.

Abstract

Based on abundant literature, Benoit Daviron sketches for us a long, economic and political history of the biomass. Farming is not just about providing food, nor is it alone in supplying the biomass. How, before and after the fossil energies, have European societies mastered the distance and mobilised the work to satisfy their growing needs? What consequences for the rest of the world? Over the years, we discover that the ability to mobilise energy and material, especially living beings, mirrors wealth and power in the leading country of the time. This book alters our queries about the future.

Abstract

Copper is used to control various fungal and bacterial diseases, especially in organic farming where synthetic fungicides are prohibited. The use of copper is subject to increasing regulatory restrictions in Europe due to its adverse effects on the environment. This book synthesizes the results of INRA scientific expertise on ‘alternatives’ to copper.
