Abstract

Cities and all the activities carried out in an urban environment significantly influence climate change causes but, at the same time, they are greatly affected by them. For these reasons, urban areas not only represent one of the problems, but also the main field of application of intervention strategies to be developed in order to mitigate the negative effects of climate change. Among the strategies to contrast climate change, the adaptation to its environmental effects has been pushed right into the background in scientific debate, mainly due to the difficulty experienced in transferring urban climatology into methods that can be easily implemented by planners to draw up land use plan. This volume is an attempt to strengthen the cultural background of urban planner, establishing solid connections with urban climatology, in order to build a new language, able to consider the relationships between urban morphology and climate change adaptation strategies to be implemented.

Abstract

In the context of Christian paraphrastic poetry, the Claudio Mario Vittorio’s Alethia is a significant example of the synthesis between the classical and the Christian world during the Late antiquity. The work, probably composed in the first half of the 5th century, is a hexametric rewrite in three books, preceded by a Precatio, of the first 19 chapters of Genesis book, from the creation of the world to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. This essay offers to the reader the translation and commentary of the Precatio and the first book of the poem. It aims to highlight the complex cultural plot of the text and, at the same time, analysing, with a predominantly intertextual approach, the paraphrasing procedures adopted by Claudio Mario Vittorio in the verse of biblical narrative. Moreover, the volume aims to give a proper account of a paraphrastic poem that deals in an admirable manner sacred history, biblical exegesis and tradition.

Abstract

The transition from the French Decade to the years of the Second Restoration represents a qualifying moment in the history of Southern Italy. Closely connected to the topic of the State-Building, studied in its peculiar traits, the construction of a modern bureaucracy begins precisely from that point, contributing to a greater articulation of the Bourbon period. The core of the volume is the structure of the Ministry of Finance, investigated by focusing on its personnel. Through extensive and unpublished records, combined with a consistent bibliography, broadly composed of primary sources, the book crosses different subjects: from governmental action to the institutional one; from the individual prospective to that of the territory. The growth of the administration, which the investigation reveals, seems to influence in many aspects the profile of southern society, suggesting a dynamic dimension of the State. In the background, there was a territory far from being inactive: in fact, the State confirms his role of place identifier and classifier, even through a process of defining a bureaucratic identity in relation to the local dimensions in which it operates

Abstract

In the last years, institutional repositories of preprints and scholarly publications have become a peak experience in the digital library environment, enabling the involvement of authors and scientific communities in a free and shared access to the results of research, and to its circulation trough the web. This volume collects a series of essays, both published and unpublished, that Antonella De Robbio wrote with respect to the issue of scientific information, and to the reply given by the Open Access Movement (OAI). The collection aims to a double purpose: first, to fill the gap in the lacking Italian bibliography concerning Open Archives; second, to take stock of the difficult situation of the Open Access Movement, and of the hope of its advocates that this movement could promote a democratic and immediate circulation of scientific knowledge.

Abstract

The D’Avalos name evokes images of cruel battles and tragic love stories, reminds figures of great warlords and sophisticated ladies, nourishes the legend of fabulous riches and luxurious residences. The work of scholars who explored the thick forest of Innico and Alfonso D’Avalos descendants do not allow to completely outline the history of this family. The family’s private archive, inviolable guardian of their memories, where records related to the private sphere and official acts, such as pontifical papers and relations with the sovereigns, are kept is still inaccessible. The records of the notary Scotto di Santolo can be very useful, because they allowed the reconstruction of the wide archival heritage coming from the past, recorded along with other property of the family after the death, in 1862, of last heir of the primary branch, the Prince Alfonso D’Avalos. The transcription of the D’Avalos archive before the Italian unification that we present can avoid its definitive "burial".

Abstract

This volume collects the peer-reviewed contributions presented at the 2nd International Conference on “Advances in Statistical Modelling of Ordinal Data” - ASMOD 2018 - held at the Department of Political Sciences of the University of Naples Federico II (24-26 October 2018). The Conference brought together theoretical and applied statisticians to share the latest studies and developments in the field. In addition to the fundamental topic of latent structure analysis and modelling, the contributions in this volume cover a broad range of topics including measuring dissimilarity, clustering, robustness, CUB models, multivariate models, and permutation tests. The Conference featured six distinguished keynote speakers: Alan Agresti (University of Florida, USA), Brian Francis (Lancaster University, UK), Bettina Gruen (Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria), Maria Kateri (RWTH Aachen, Germany), Elvezio Ronchetti (University of Geneva, Switzerland), Gerhard Tutz (Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich, Germany). The volume includes 22 contributions from scholars that were accepted as full papers for inclusion in this edited volume after a blind review process of two anonymous referees.

Abstract

The book illustrates the reconstruction of the system of granting Neapolitan citizenship during the sixteenth century. In particular, the role played by the ‘Regia Camera della Sommaria’, the highest tax magistrature of the Kingdom of Naples, in the evaluation of requests and in the assignment of the citizenship licenses, which allowed access to the substantial tax and jurisdictional privileges of the capital city. The policy of the Spanish government with respect to these privileges is based on prudence and attention to the political and social balance of a fundamental and complex capital as Naples is. The ‘Sommaria’, however, manages in establishing a system of control and government of privileges, which makes the Neapolitan citizenship for a large part a product of the state; also subtracting expertise in the field to the city's municipal government.

Abstract

The book presents the correspondence between Roberto Michels and the Italian and French (Sorel and Lagardelle) syndicalists, which constitutes an essential historiographical source for the reconstruction of the controversial political biography of the sociologist. An introductory essay by Giorgio Volpe provides a critical interpretation of Michels' position within the socialist movement. It reconstructs the background of Michels' correspondences and studies the phases of his political militancy through the analysis of his political articles, sociological studies, autobiographical notes and reports on the Italian and German socialist parties' congresses.

Abstract

For thousands of years, pharmacological knowledge coming from natural remedies, has been handed down from generation to generation, without any awareness of the ways in which preparations are made to face diseases. The advent of pharmaceutical chemistry and of the modern drug industry turned that lack of awareness into a scientific knowledge that changed the destiny of the human race. The twenty-eight chapters of this book, are taken from the lectures held by Professor Ettore Novellino every year in his course “Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Toxicology 2”. The first chapters address the basic notions of drugs, homeostasis, pharmacopoeia, and receptor; then, the different pharmaceutical classes are introduced by analyzing their pharmacological and chemical aspects. In particular, the structural study of the interaction between drugs and receptors or biological enzymes gives the fundamentals to connect the chemical and stereochemical properties of a compound family, with the biological activity, a correlation better known as Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR). Several examples of the synthesis of some of the most historically renown drugs, provided at the end of each chapter, integrate the book.

Abstract

After centuries of submission to the foreign rulers, between the eighteenth and the nineteenth century the South of Italy took a leading role in the European political landscape, on one hand absorbing in its culture the huge heritage of values and knowledge of those civilizations, on the other hand appealing to its own scientists, intellectuals and technicians’ fervid minds to achieve relevant international goals in the field of the public and urbanistic works. Kings, such as Charles of Bourbon and Ferdinand II, were the main promoters of this ransom and of the achieved primacies. Rummaging through the iconographic documents passed on their desks, nowadays rearranged in the Neapolitan National library Palatine collection and consulting the volumes of the Royal library, it turns out a great turmoil of ideas and projects, but also the confirmation of the large amount of potentialities unfortunately not completely expressed by the Neapolitan State: it occurred, it should be said, not only as a consequence of the end of the kingdom, but also as a result of the specific political responsibility of that dynasty: Unfortunately Italy’s unification didn’t enhance the heritage of these experiences, nor it rectified the structural inadequacies of the former regime; on the contrary the new State often contributed to increase them, stifling a socio-economic promise of development still today unrealized.
