About

The new OA e-book series "I Quaderni del Lab" is conceived as supplements to the OA e-journal "Laboratorio dell'Ispf" (indexed in DOAJ since 2009). Started in 2014, it is going to publish 2-4 issues per year including modern editions of classical texts, original research monographies and proceedings.

Peer review info

All manuscripts undergo an in-house assessment. Subsequently, copies are submitted to an external double blind peer review process. The reviewers are experts in the subject area and independent from our organization. After discussing the reviewer’s comments with the author, the Series Editors decide whether to proceed with the publication.

Abstract

Tommaso Rossi (1673-1743), Abbot of Montefusco in the Kingdom of Naples, devoted his life to metaphysical and theological studies and had epistolary relations with Giambattista Vico. In his philosophical works "Dell’animo dell’uomo" and "Della mente sovrana del mondo", he faced the problem of human nature and of the nature of God’s mind, crossing some key-questions in the philosophy of modern age, such as the mind-body relation, the possibility for the human knowledge to know the natural and divine things, and the definition of the matter. Tommaso Rossi’s thought, hostile to all forms of atheism and materialism, took part in the philosophical debate which, from Locke to Descartes and Spinoza, tried to define the new field and the new role of natural science. "Della mente sovrana del mondo" (1743), whose third part is dedicated to the exam of Spinoza’s philosophical system, is an important document, not only of the reception of Spinoza, but also of the philosophical redefinition for a cosmological and gnoseological order where the human wit plays a very important role.

Abstract

Like many young Neapolitan physicians, Giosuè Sangiovanni (1776-1849) was involved in the revolution of 1799. He served in the Guard of the Republic, whose tragic end marked his destiny as an exile and a scientist. Sangiovanni keeps track of this experience in his Diaries (1800-1808), hitherto unpublished, where he notes in a fast and sometimes syncopated way the record of his wanderings in Italy, France, Switzerland, Tyrol, Piedmont. There we find not only places, meetings, small events and daily life’s adventures - almost the backbone of the autobiography of an Neapolitan exile - but above all the story of an educational trip. In Paris, thanks to his contact with prominent naturalists of the time, such as Cuvier, Lamarck, Saint-Hilaire, Lacépède, this pupil of Domenico Cirillo’s reaches his scientific maturity and his academic recognition. Sangiovanni’s Diaries end with his final return to Naples, where he, now an advocate of Lamarck’s evolutionary theory, was appointed professor of the first chair of Comparative Anatomy in Italy.

Abstract

Research paths around Vico and Leopardi: power and limits of human knowledge. This volume collects the papers presented at a seminar held in Potenza in November 2016 and constitutes the first outcome of a research project promoted by the Istituto per la storia del pensiero filosofico e scientifico moderno of the National Research Council, the Centro nazionale di studi leopardiani in Recanati, together with the National Library Vittorio Emanuele III in Naples and a network of Italian and foreign universities. The aim is to reflect on the relationship between Vico and Leopardi by reading jointly the Scienza nuova and the Zibaldone, without neglecting traces spread in other works, as well as the identification of the sources inside Vico’s and Leopardi’s libraries. The research bears witness to the fortune of the Scienza nuova in the early XIXth century and shows how Vico and Leopardi recapture in their works issues debated throughout Europe. Among them the relationship between philosophy and poetry, the analysis of the forms of knowledge (i.e., “poetical wisdom”, “fairy tale”, “myth”), the semantics of imagination, the relationship between civilization and barbarism, as well as language-related issues such as “origins of languages”, “symbolic language”, “language and thought”.

Abstract

The present study of Giambattista Vico’s defining work, La Scienza nuova (The New Science) is concerned with an approach to the work that pays requisite attention not only to the content but also to its form. To that end, Horst Steinke proposes that Scienza nuova possesses the structure of a ring composition by which individual parts of the work relate to each other in complex but identifiable ways. This approach, which is developed through a discussion of all five Books that make up the work, also leads to, or implies, certain constraints on the interpretation of Vico’s thought, resulting from an interplay of form and content. Since Vico made Homer the centerpiece of his own work, Vico’s hermeneutics are discussed in the context of his underlying philosophy of language, and both are compared with Spinoza’s thought. Finally, the so-called “Homeric question”, in Vico’s view, is addressed in an original way.

Abstract

The essays included in this volume assume Giambattista Vico’s theory of the “conceits” (borie) as a heuristic paradigm for investigating different forms of arrogance by peoples and by kinds of knowledge. The book is made up of three sections. In the first one – “A possible Vichian paradigm” – Manuela Sanna’s essay examines the theme of the conceits in Vico’s writings, exploring it in all its ramifications. The essay by Giuseppe Cacciatore extrapolates the concept of conceit from Vico’s page and turns it into an useful tool for unmasking “other” kinds of arrogance. In the second section – “A retrospective” – a possible backwards path is outlined: various expressions of arrogance by peoples and by kinds of knowledge are investigated in authors closer to Vico or even more distant from him, like Molina, Montaigne and Diodorus, who was among Vico’s sources. The third section – “With Vico beyond Vico” – hosts contributions by scholars who tested the paradigm of the conceits in authors ranging from Descartes to Samuel Beckett. This results in a theoretical and historical framework that, without claiming to be exhaustive or organic, provides a varied and rich survey of the topic.
