Edition Open Access provides open access to the publications of the Max Planck Research Library for the History and Development of Knowledge, and of Edition Open Sources in accordance with the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to knowledge in the sciences and humanities, which was launched by the Max Planck Society in 2003. The aim is to disseminate peer-reviewed results of scholarly work to a broad audience rapidly and at low cost. The volumes presented are directed at scholars and students in a wide range of disciplines and are available online, as print-on-demand books and open-access publications.

Prior to publication, all Edition Open Access volumes undergo a strict peer-reviewing process. Members of the editorial board not only monitor this process, but in addition suggest and supervise suitable publications for inclusion in Edition Open Access. Works that have not undergone a reviewing process will not be considered for Edition Open Access.

Der Liber de triplici motu ist ein Werk von Alvarus Thomas aus dem Jahr 1509. Das Buch repräsentiert einen letzten Höhepunkt der scholastischen Auseinandersetzung mit der aristotelischen Bewegungslehre vor der Entstehung der klassischen Mechanik, an dem man die entscheidenden Stadien der Transformation des Bewegungsbegriffs seit der Antike studieren kann. Von zukunftsweisender Bedeutung ist darin die mathematische Proportionslehre und die damit verbundene Quantifizierung von naturphilosophischen Qualitäten nach den Methoden der Oxforder Kalkulatoren wie zum Beispiel die Quantifizierung der Geschwindigkeit einer Bewegung. Aus dem Inhalt und der Strukturierung des Werks sowie dem Leben von Alvarus Thomas lassen sich die Zusammenhänge zwischen Formen und Inhalten der Wissensvermittlung und Wissensproduktion, zwischen wissenschaftlicher Forschung und wissenschaftlicher Sozialisation für das frühe 16. Jahrhundert erhellen. Dieser erste Band zu Alvarus Thomas und seinem Liber de triplici motu bietet zudem einen strukturierten Abriss des Werks, einen Glossar zum mathematischen und naturphilosophischen Vokabular sowie weiteres bibliographisches Material. Die Edition Open Sources (EOS) setzt ein neues Paradigma im Verlagswesen im Hinblick auf wissenschaftliche Publikationen von Quellen um. "In mechanica Aristotelis problemata exercitationes", scritte da Bernardino Baldi, vengono ristampate – provviste d'introduzione e commento – come quarto volume della collana "Sources" della "Max Planck Research Library for the History and Development of Knowledge", la versione Italiana di "Sources 3". Il volume è disponibile in internet senza limitazioni d'accesso anche come pubblicazione elettronica "open-access" all'indirizzo www.edition-open-access.de. Il testo venne pubblicato nel 1621, quattro anni dopo la morte dell’autore. Questo libro appartiene alla lunga tradizione rinascimentale concernente lo studio dei "Problemi Meccanici" pseudo-aristotelici. A differenza della maggior parte delle altre opere scritte durante il XVI secolo, tuttavia, il testo di Baldi esprime una posizione critica nei confronti dell’approccio teorico presente nelle meccaniche pseudo-aristoteliche. Il testo delle "Exercitationes" mostra una sistematica applicazione dei principi archimedei alla spiegazione delle questioni discusse nei "Problemi Meccanici" e, dunque, illustra chiaramente la struttura a forma di patchwork della meccanica preclassica. The "Exercitationes" display a systematic application of Archimedean principles to the explanation of the questions discussed in "Mechanical Problems" illustrating the patchwork character of preclassical mechanics. Moreover, Baldi's work presents lengthy digressions that considerably widen the boundaries of mechanics.

Abstract

Biomass will play an important role in the future for the replacement of fossil sources for fuels and chemicals. Catalytic processes are required for the efficient conversion of biomass. The development of such processes and the understanding of the catalytic reactions of biomass molecules has recently attracted considerable and increasing attention. In this book, thirteen experts in different fields deliver their views on the state-of-the-art and future development of the use of biomass as a sustainable feedstock for the chemical industry. The book focuses on chemical aspects, such as catalyst development product analysis or reaction engineering, but also seeks a wider perspective and convers related issues like bioeconomics and plant growth. This book is aimed at students and scientists in the interdisciplinary field of catalysis for an introduction to the emerging field of biomass conversion and an overview on recent developments and challenges. Abstract

Two gifted eighteenth-century Londoners, Charles Cavendish and his painfully preeminent son Henry were descendants of paired revolutions, one political and one scientific. Scions of a powerful revolutionary family, they gave an original turn to the duty of public service that attached to their social rank. The English aristocracy knew one of its finest hours when Henry Cavendish gently laid his delicate weights in the scales of the first great precision balance of the century. For this action to happen, it took two generations and two kinds of invention, one in social forms and the other in scientific methods. This joint biography of father and son tells how it came to pass. Henry Cavendish is best known for his researches in chemistry, electricity, and heat, but in truth he worked in every part of physical science, bringing to it his unique combination of experimental precision and mathematical penetration. His accomplishment is likened to the highest example: since the death of Newton, Humphry Davy wrote, England has suffered "no scientific loss so great as that of Cavendish." Through inheritance he became immensely rich. Regarding intellect and fortune, he is called "the wisest of the rich and the richest of the wise." In his exclusive devotion to science, he is compared with "the most austere anchorites," who were "not more faithful to their vows." With reference to his legendary shyness, he is described as a man of "most reserved disposition," of a "degree bordering on disease." He was, to be sure, all of these things: one of the best scientists of his time, one of the richest men in the kingdom, a member of one of the politically most influential aristocratic families, a scientific fanatic, and a person of extraordinary peculiarities. This biography, a major revision of the original published in 1999, offers an enlarged understanding of the eighteenth century world of science and a reevaluation both of the scientific genius and of the remarkable personality of Henry Cavendish. It is a comprehensive study of science, family, and society in the eighteenth century.

Um 1100 entstand erstmals seit der Antike wieder eine Stadtkultur in Europa. Nur wenige Zeitzeugnisse sind bisher greifbar, die zum Verständnis dieses Phänomens beitragen. Die detaillierte Untersuchung dokumentiert und datiert in Cluny, einem Zentrum der mittelalterlichen Welt, die bisher frühesten Stadthäuser des Mittelalters in Frankreich, außerdem bestimmt sie den einzigen weitgehend erhaltenen Großbau der Abtei als Aula von Cluny III und korrigiert den Kontext bekannt geglaubter romanischer Stadthäuser. Ergebnis ist eine für Europa exemplarische, differenzierte Typologie der mittelalterlichen "domus solarata", die enge Parallelen etwa zum hochmittelalterlichen Rom oder auch Freiburg i. Br. aufzeigt. Das verbreitete Stadtentstehungsmodell von Cluny wird vor dem Hintergrund der untersuchten Bauten revidiert, die Schriftüberlieferung teils neu ausgewertet, "villa" und "burgus" werden als präurbane Phasen eingegrenzt. Die verformungsgerechte Gebäudedokumentation erschließt zeitspezifisches Bau– und Planungswissen, das die Raumwahrnehmung und –ordnung des Hochmittelalters erhellt und auf die Tradition des spätantiken "Corpus agrimensorum" verweist.

Abstract

This study, the second volume of the series "Sources" of the "Max Planck Research Library for the History and Development of Knowledge," reviews a historical discussion about the question of whether a balance in equilibrium, after having been deflected, returns to its original position. This question captured the attention of philosophers and scientists for almost two millennia, from Greek antiquity to the sixteenth century when the "equilibrium controversy" became a central question among scholars. Two new sources related to this controversy are presented: an annotated copy of Jordanus de Nemore's "Liber de ponderibus" edited by Petrus Apianus in 1533 and an annotated copy of Giovanni Battista Benedetti's "Diversarum speculationum mathematicarum et physicarum liber" from 1585. Both works contain handwritten marginal notes by Guidobaldo del Monte, author of the most influential early modern text on mechanics. A detailed analysis of these sources, their prehistory, and their contexts shows that the "equilibrium controversy" only scratched the surface of a much deeper conceptual crisis of early modern mechanics that was triggered by the introduction of the medieval concept of "positional heaviness" into early modern discussions. This crisis helped to establish fundamental insights on which Galileo eventually built his theory of mechanics as well as his theory of motion.

Abstract

Today scientific, technological and cultural knowledge is shared worldwide. The extent to which globalized knowledge also existed in the past is an open question and, moreover, a question that is important for understanding present processes of globalization. This book, the first volume of the series "Studies" of the "Max Planck Research Library for the History and Development of Knowledge," the result of an interdisciplinary cooperation launched in 2007 by a Dahlem Conference, offers surprising answers to this question. Long-distance and intercontinental connections with an attendant spread of knowledge are as old as Homo sapiens themselves. Since its inception, the globalization of knowledge has been a process with its own dynamics, interfering significantly with other processes of intercultural transmission. The four parts of this volume address historical phases in which the production, transmission and transformation of knowledge were crucial for advancing these processes. Part 1 investigates a series of processes in the very early phases of globalization, from the transmission of practical knowledge to the emergence of science. Part 2 explores how knowledge was disseminated as a consequence of the spread of power and belief structures. Part 3 deals with the encounters between culturally specific knowledge and globalized knowledge. Abstract

This volume investigates processes of knowledge formation in the Iberian colonies by attempting to understand the Spanish and Portuguese contribution to the European scientific tradition, and by tracing the origins and history of this knowledge to find out how it was gained. The studies in this volume reconsider our understanding of what scientific knowledge is and introduce a variety of scientific cultures of European and non-European origin. They examine the mixing processes of scientific cultures and the role these cultures played in the colonial situation at the intersection of non-human processes and human action. The volume brings together contributions in the history of botany, art, materia medica, translation in the religious sphere of colonial missions as well as mining as a scientific, juridical and industrial endeavor.
