About

Following the founding of the Central European University by the Hungarian-American philanthropist George Soros, CEU Press was established in 1993. The publishing program of CEU Press focuses on issues of Central and Eastern Europe; it is also committed to the past and present history, society, culture and economy of the countries of the former Soviet Union and its neighbors. The Press has started expanding its list to include books in the field of Arabic and Islamic studies, higher education policy and media studies. CEU Press aims to build upon its established reputation as a publisher in this field and expand its list as resources and opportunities allow. The Press will be responsive to authors seeking to place high-quality manuscripts but will also take initiatives in commissioning individual books and series. This remit includes research monographs and other specialist texts, the publication of archive material and also books of high quality destined for a more general readership. Central University Press publishes books on the political philosophy and practices of open society, history, legal studies, nationalism, human rights, conflict resolution, gender studies, Jewish studies economics, medieval studies, literature, and international relations.

Peer review info

If you have a manuscript appropriate to our publishing program that you would like us to consider, we ask that you first submit a Manuscript Information Sheet (MIS). You can either email it to Szabolcs László, fax it to +36-1-327-3183 or send it to CEU Press, H-1051 Budapest, Október 6. u. 14, Hungary. If we decide to pursue consideration of your project, we will request the full manuscript and send it to two outside reviewers. To allow for careful consideration, we give our readers eight to ten weeks, on average, to complete their evaluation. Please bear in mind that the peer review process can be time consuming, especially for highly specialized topics. We ask for your patience and understanding. If the Press determines that the project is a strong candidate for publication, we will prepare a proposal for review and approval by the Press's Editorial Committee. The Editorial Committee meets once in three-four months. You will be notified shortly after the meeting regarding the committee's decision. We make every effort to ensure that editorial decisions are made in a timely manner.

Abstract

This book interrogates the nature of anti-Americanism today and over the last century. It asks several questions: How do we define the phenomenon from different perspectives: political, social, and cultural? What are the historical sources and turning points of anti-Americanism in Europe and elsewhere? What are its links with anti-Semitic sentiment? Has anti-Americanism been beneficial or self-destructive to its “believers”? Finally, how has the United States responded and why? The authors, ...

Abstract

The ""war on terror"" has generated a scramble for expertise on Islamic or Asian ""culture"" and revived support for area studies, but it has done so at the cost of reviving the kinds of dangerous generalizations that area studies have rightly been accused of. This book provides a much-needed perspective on area studies, a perspective that is attentive to both manifestations of ""traditional culture"" and the new global relationships in which they are being played out. The authors shake off the sha...

Abstract

Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović (1881–1956) is arguably one the most controversial figures in contemporary Serbian national culture. Having been vilified by the former Yugoslav Communist authorities as a fascist and an antisemite, this Orthodox Christian thinker has over the past two decades come to be regarded in Serbian society as the most important religious person since medieval times and an embodiment of the authentic Serbian national spirit. Velimirović was formally canonised by the Serbian ...

Abstract

This study addresses the relation of people to divine beings in contemporary and historical communities, as exemplified in three strands. One is a long tradition of visions of mysterious wayfarers in rural Spain who bring otherworldly news and help, including recent examples. Another treats the seeming vivification of religious images—statues, paintings, engravings, and photographs apparently exuding blood, sweat and tears in Spanish homes and churches in the early modern period and the revi...

Abstract

In Emotion and Devotion Miri Rubin explores the craft of the historian through a series of studies of medieval religious cultures. In three original chapters she approaches the medieval figure of the Virgin Mary with the aim of unravelling meaning and experience. Hymns and miracle tales, altarpieces and sermons – a wide range of sources from many European regions – are made to reveal the creativity and richness which they elicited in medieval people, women and men, clergy and laity, people of...

Abstract

Coming to terms with emotions and how they influence human behaviour, seems to be of the utmost importance to societies that are obsessed with everything “neuro.” On the other hand, emotions have become an object of constant individual and social manipulation since “emotional intelligence” emerged as a buzzword of our times. Reflecting on this burgeoning interest in human emotions makes one think of how this interest developed and what fuelled it. From a historian’s point of view, it can be t...

Abstract

Argues for an original, unorthodox conception about the relationship between globalization and contemporary nationalism. While the prevailing view holds that nationalism and globalization are forces of clashing opposition, Sabanadze establishes that these tend to become allied forces. Acknowledges that nationalism does react against the rising globalization and represents a form of resistance against globalizing influences, but the Basque and Georgian cases prove that globalization and nation...

Abstract

Certain to engender debate in the media, especially in Ukraine itself, as well as the academic community. Using a wide selection of newspapers, journals, monographs, and school textbooks from different regions of the country, the book examines the sensitive issue of the changing perspectives – often shifting 180 degrees – on several events discussed in the new narratives of the Stalin years published in the Ukraine since the late Gorbachev period until 2005. These events were pivotal to Ukrai...
